A Random Historical Observation

I always thought there was a connection between the American Civil War and the formation of Canada. After all, the war ended in 1865 and just two years later the constituent parts of Canada struck down the divisions that existed between them.

I do find a serious flaw in this theory of mine, though. Since the Confederates lost the Civil War, why would Canada decide to call itself a Confederation? Were we thumbing our noses at the Yankees?
